PE Department Physical Education (Exercise) is essential. This is recognised by medical as well as educational authorities; therefore PE is compulsory for the pre-16 school. The department's aim is to offer a wide range of activities in an endeavour to interest pupils in some form of exercise. Activities studied in S1-S2 are covered in more detail in the Standard Grade curriculum, where an element of choice is also introduced to create additional interest. Fitness work is compulsory throughout S1 to S4. Activities in the Standard Grade curriculum must obviously be co-educational and specific areas are designated by the Scottish Qualifications Authority to assume a balanced course.
At Higher-Still level, this is integrated with analysis as well as the pupil becoming involved in an out-of-school fitness timetable, which he or she must follow and continually report on. There are many extra-curricular activities which the PE department are actively involved in. These include Fitness, Dance, Basketball, Football, Badminton, Table-tennis, Short tennis and Dodgeball. Mr W MacDonald (PT) Standard Grade PE The Standard Grade Physical Education course enables pupils to take part in a range of physical activities. It aims to help them to understand the principles involved and through practical experience to learn to apply these principles to a variety of activities. The course also encourages pupils to make and accept decisions and to take on responsibility. Each school chooses its own combination of physical activities covering individual and team situations.
Assessment and certification Assessment is based on three elements as follows:
Practical Performance is assessed by the teacher with assessment standards checked by the Scottish Qualifications Authority. Knowledge and Understanding and Evaluating are assessed by a written examination set and marked by the Scottish Qualifications Authority, based on a video presentation. Question papers are offered at three levels: Foundation, General and Credit. Pupils normally attempt the questions at the two levels best suited to their ability as shown in class.
In Hermitage Academy One period per week is theory based, in our own PE classroom, and two periods per week are performance based in a gymnasium, games hall or outdoors. Pupils will be expected to write notes following each lesson on what they have learned and will be given regular homework and end of unit tests.
The activities likely to be offered as part of the course may include:- Athletics, Badminton, Football, Rugby, Basketball, Gymnastics, Hockey.
The course cannot be completed unless there is full participation in activities Intermediate 2 PE This course will offer pupils the opportunity to develop and extend their skills and techniques, enhance their knowledge and understanding and broaden their ability to investigate, analyse and evaluate performance.
