  • Aims of the Department

We want every pupil to achieve his or her potential in mathematics.

  • Staff

There are 9 full time and two part time members of staff in the department and 11 teaching rooms. The school server is fitted with a selection of mathematical software that is fully utilized in both the classroom and in our very own computer suite.

  • Ethos

We aim to create a positive learning environment so that pupils will not only enjoy their experience in our department, but will also develop the problem solving skills they will need to succeed in the wider world.

  • Courses

S1 & S2

We offer a wide range of courses from Level A through to Level F. Every pupil has access to their own textbook as well as all the various interactive software we have at our disposal either through individual laptops or the computer suite. The department also runs various initiatives, including a recent garden project, which allow pupils to experience mathematics in the real world.

S3 – S4

Pupils will either sit Access 3, Intermediate 1 or Intermediate 2 depending on their performance in S2. Each course consists of 3 units each with their own internal assessment and each must be passed in order to sit the final exam. The department offers supported study at lunchtimes as well as various resources to be worked on at home to thoroughly prepare pupils for when they sit their final exam. Support can also be received at home, both from staff and fellow pupils, through our online learning portal GLOW.

S5-S6

Pupils will either sit Intermediate 1, Intermediate 2, Higher or Advanced Higher. These courses follow the same structure as S3-S4 with 3 unit tests and a final exam. Supported study is offered at both lunchtimes and after school and again, pupils are encouraged to use our online learning portal GLOW where they can access various resources to aid their studying.

  • Transition

The department has forged excellent links with our local primaries and every year we continue to build on these to the benefit of our pupils.

  • GLOW

We feel one of our main successes in the past year has been our implementation of the online learning portal GLOW. Pupils can use GLOW to access additional resources at home, which can be printed off or downloaded straight to their computer. There is a message board where pupils can post a question should they be experiencing difficulty with coursework and questions are usually quickly answered by other pupils or even members of staff. There is also an online chat room within the site where pupils can communicate quickly and effectively if they need instant support. The many pupils we have asked cannot speak highly enough about the positive impact GLOW has made on their coursework and our department recently won an award in a regional competition for our implementation of it.

  • Homework Policy

The department runs a thorough formal homework policy where results are closely monitored. If a pupil does not gain a satisfactory pass they will be advised to attend a lunchtime clinic where they will receive support in the areas they are experiencing difficulty. It is our new policy to send pupils formal homework through their school email address so that they can access it directly from home which means that pupils can still receive homework even if they are absent.

  • Information for parents

We are working on the possibility of introducing a parent section to our online learning portal so that the department can better links with parents.

  • Maths Competitions

The department regularly takes part in Maths competitions, both at authority and national level. We are pleased to mention that we are regular winners at authority level.

  • Pupils’ work gallery
  • Photo gallery

We are currently working on a photo gallery which will display many things that are currently happening in our department, such as recent trips and competitions.
