The Science Department comprises thirteen highly motivated teaching staff supported by two technicians. All teachers have their own large, modern and well equipped laboratories. All labs have separate teaching and practical areas. Currently, all pupils follow a common course in S1 and 2 and then specialise in one or more of Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Science in S3 and beyond. (Currently, the department is preparing a new, updated course in line with the Scottish Government’s revised curriculum - this will be phased in, starting in August 2010 with the S1 intake). All science courses have significant practical work. Equipment, chemicals and other practical resources are organised and maintained by our experienced technicians: Mr I Fogo Miss M McFadyen
Some pupils are advised to study Standard Grade Science in S3/4. This course is less demanding than the other courses and focuses on aspects of Biology, Chemistry and Physics that are especially relevant to life in the modern world and highlight importance of science. For example, there are units that deal with global warming, pollution and the effects of smoking, alcohol and drugs. There are up to sixteen short Units of work in the course, many of which are based on practical work that makes the concepts easier to understand by maximising the pupils' interest and enjoyment. |
