Welcome to FAB at Hermitage Academy On average every 4 out of 10 children are bullied in the UK alone. To help combat this Hermitage Academy have a dedicated group of senior pupils who are determined to bring this number down, and hopefully make bullying a thing of the past. For the past 10 years FAB has cut the number of cases of bullying dramatically and we hope to continue our work. All of our members are always happy to talk about any problems you, your friends or your children may have. Secondary school is a fantastic experience for all pupils, and should not be ruined by bullying behaviour. Argyll & Bute Anti-Bullying Policy Bullying is prevalent and pervasive through society Only a minority suffer but the effects are immediate and long term. Children who are bullied lose confidence and develop feelings of inadequacy. Argyll and Bute definition of bullying:- Bullying is repeated oppression, psychological or physical, of a less powerful person by a more powerful person or groups of persons. It can take many forms. These include physical and verbal aggression, intimidation, threats, extortion, pressurising, name-calling and marginalization It is unhelpful to use the terms “bully” and “victim” as they involve labelling. Rather, reference should be made to “bullying behaviour” and “bullied child or person”. Argyll and Bute Council Community Services - Education will not tolerate any form of bullying within its educational establishments. Establishments will promote an ethos of equality, fairness and mutual respect where all members of its community will take responsibility for reporting and challenging bullying behaviour. All reported incidents will be taken seriously, investigated and appropriate action taken. What do we do? The most important parts of what the FAB group do are:
FAB meets on Friday afternoons to learn important communication and counselling skills, causes of bullying behaviour and stratgeies to prevent and deal with bullying. We also visit local Primary schools to help support the P7 pupils prior to transition to S1, and contribute to the PSE programme by delivering anti-bullying lessons. Members are available every lunch and break, around the school to stop bullying in the grounds. This also paired with the S1 buddy scheme, where every first year has a sixth year buddy with whom they can confide any problems they have. If you have any worries or issues or just need someone to talk to, FAB is here for you. We now have a “Virtual Worry Box” for pupils to drop their worries into and one of the FAB members will get back to you. The following links may be useful if you need help with bullying related issues www.pacerkidsagainstbullying.org Subject Choice As one of the courses you can pick in sixth year, FAB counts as an Int. 1 - or an Int. 2 if combined with tutoring. Part of the course involves 20 hours worth of volunteer work which can be taken up with patrolling the school and grounds, or talking with your first year buddies and helping them with any problems they may have. As a member of FAB, you will get help in improving skills such as communication and teamwork as well as counselling skills, which are highly desirable in any profession. It is a particuluarly good choice for pupils interested in a career working with children or any caring profession. |
